The Final Blog Post!...

In the final reading of our text and the last couple classes, we have discussed the inter-relationship or the interconnectedness of man with animals and technology. I stressed the idea of "networks", and how humans are made up of cellular networks but also how we interact within broader definitions of the term network. These days within the art world there are theories that center on man as a cyborg or the idea of man as a hybrid type of machine...this is due in part to our ever growing dependence on forms of technology...we are connected to our cell phones, laptops, mp3 players, which are in turn connected to much larger networks...and it is this connection that links our human flesh and bone with circuits and wire...therefore mingling our souls with machinery....something to think about!

In class we watched both Tim Hawkinson and Mel Chin on art21. Both artists use technology in their art works...Hawkinson, incorporating more crude, mechanical or kinetic elements that reference the human body and Chin using science and advanced technology as primary elements in his work. These two artists, although working in different ways, talk about the human condition in their works...social communities, our own bodies, emotions, and environmental concerns in our immediate surroundings. Take a moment to revisit those links and look over/read their work and info then respond to one or more of the following :

How much do we model the systems/structures we make-whether freeways or the Internet-upon systems within our own bodies?

Because of ecological changes as well as technological changes, how is art different now from art work created in the 1950's.

How do these two artists above, show us the good and bad results of man's fascination with machines?

Do you believe that you are interconnected with much larger systems of knowledge and networks and that in some ways you rely on machinery/technology as much as you rely on your body?

I belive that art has changed ecologically and technically from the the 1950s because we have a greater technology base in the world and more people understand it. Also technology is used and more common now than in the 1950s, we as Americans spend alot of time on machines today. technology keeps changing as well as art does. In art today technology is used more often and some artists base their work on it such as Tim F, and ecologically, Mel Chin bases his art on it.

technology has a huge impact as to what art is today. techonolgy has help shaped society to what it is today. the more advanced the world gets the more we learn. as long as we keep moving forward in technology the more advanced art will get.

We are definitely interconnected with larger systems of knowledge. THe internet is a giant network where you can find anything you could ever dream of. Our society definitely relys on technology and machinery as much as our body. When it comes to our body we definitely rely on technology to fix ourselves. It seems that there is a cure for any ailment you may have and they all seem to rely on some sort of technology.

I do believe that I am interconnected with much larger systems of knowledge and networks and that in some ways I do rely on machinery/technology as much as my body. Since I grew up in an era that is based on technology, I am used to relying on it. Even systems of knowledge and networks because I use networks that are resourceful, such as the internet. Which is a network that a lot of people rely on for information, and news.So yes I do believe that I rely on these things.

A wise man once said that you must take the good with the bad. The same is true with this new network of technology as see thought the eyes of two different artists Mel Chin and Tim Hawkinson. We see that Chin is a humanitarian and shows us how this new technology and art can be used for good. “In “KNOWMAD,” Chin worked with software engineers to create a video game based on rug patterns of nomadic peoples facing persecution.” Showing us that Chin is attempting to aid this persecuted people though new technology and art. He is using the video game, technology, to help the world. Another work “Revival Field,” Chin worked with scientists to create sculpted gardens of hyperaccumulators—plants that can draw heavy metals from contaminated areas—in some of the most polluted sites in the world. Again, Chin is using the new technology and his art to raise the quality of life for the people of the world. Tim Hawkinson, another artist who utilizes technology, brings out another view. This is not a view I think he intended to bring out but an underlying one I pick up on. (Maybe because I have seen too many Sci-Fi movies) ”His installation “Überorgan”—a stadium-size, fully automated bagpipe—was pieced together from bits of electrical hardware and several miles of inflated plastic sheeting.” This being a piece of artwork that can be used and ran without a human, fully automated, to me shows us all how easy we can be replaced by machines and technology. “Pentecost, a work in which the artist tuned cardboard tubes and assembled them in the shape of a giant tree. On this tree the artist placed twelve life-size robotic replicas of him, and programmed them to beat out religious hymns at humorously irregular intervals.” Is a bit funny to me, robots beating out religious tunes? When did robots have a religion? This shows not only we can be replaced but the fact that robots can have religion and feelings. Kind of a bit “IRobot”ish and anyone who has seen that movie knows why that is bad. This seems to me like the two biggest issues of technology. Is it good or bad? This has yet to be determined as illustrated so well by our two art21 artists. But as a wise man said take the good with the bad.

Because of technological changes, art it much different now than it was in the 1950's. Art in the 1950's was just basic art work with no machinary or technology being used on the work. The technological changes have made it so that artists are capable of doing more things to their work. The world has moved forward with technology as it has with art. There are now so many possibilities for art work and not as many limitations. Technology really has had an impact with the change of art.

I think that art has clearly changed technically from the 1950's. Not only do we have more technology to use, I dont believe 1950's artist were as interested in even using technology in art as we are today.

Artist today have the use of the internet as in contrast to the artists in the 1950's. The internet is huge today and has a ton of resources in which the artist today and browse and look at. Resources are more widely open and easier to get to then back then. Also we are all interconnected through networks such as the internet. The internet lets us talk to anyone at anytime. What ever we need to find out about can be done on the internet.

Art has developed so much since the 1950s because our dependence on technology is now displayed through the art. It is common to have machinery and technology involved in artwork and play a large part in it. Some art is strictly just technological. It shows how much we rely on technology/machinery and how crucial it has become in our lives. We are so connected to it that it has become a part of ourselves.

I believe that in today's society many people rely on machinery/technology a lot. Just about everyone has a cell phone that is attached to them all the time, and knows what is going on. Everyone is much more technologically advanced today then years back. Technology keeps people interconnected to different networks, whether it be for work or school. I think that today's technical advances has helped to shape society.

I think that the changes in econlogical and in technology has effected art in many ways. 1950's art wasnt focused on technology and machines. Looking at art that was made in the 1950's has a diffrent feel to it. The Technology is ever changing along side as technology based art.

I don't believe that these machines model humans as much as the exact opposite. Most of the technology that has been created in the world is designed, basically, around the understanding that we have, or had at the time of the machines creation, on how the body works and speaks to different parts of itself. Since the 1950's we have learned much more on the part of anatomy and why the body works the way it does. We have learned exactly how complex the body is, and therefore some of our machines have become more complex. The machines are also more complex because we have moved away from modeling original machinery after the body systems and have, instead, improved upon the original machines that were made, creating much more advanced technology.

The two artists show us that machinary and technology have become a mandatory part of our lives, and that it can be really fascinating and awesome, but at the same time we have allowed those parts of our lives to take over our "human" side. It has become apparent to me that humans could NOT survive without technology, and not simply because we wouldn't have the development of modern medicines and such, but also because we take for granted the simplest tasks like oh, I don't know, WALKING or writing a LETTER. Modern people are so far from independent and so lazy that surviving without technology would simply not work out.
As far as the artists go, they also show us how damaging on our environment that humans have been. We don't realize what kind of havic we can really cause. It's important to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. Whats more important; material things or preserving some of our diminishing earth.

I do believe that i rely on technolgy as much as my body...these days it is necessary for school and almost very job. Every Class has assignments that deal with using a computer even this class whithout the internet we couldn't blog. I know i could survibe without these things but nowadays i dont know what i did without my computer or cellphone. technolgy has definitly improve our lives.

-I think our body is a big model for the systems that we make. As you look at roadways you can see that there are many different little roads that attach on to larger roads that then connect to even bigger highways and on to turnpikes. This is much like our vein and nerve systems in our bodies.

Because of ecological changes as well as technological changes, how is art different now from art work created in the 1950's.
-Art work today is much more technology based. Today art is able to move and do things that were unthinkable in the 1950s.

art is different now from art work created in the 1950's because of ecological changes as well as technological changes. I believe this is true because today artists use many different forms of techonolgy in their artwork, if they choose to do so. In the 1950s, people were not as technologically advanced; therefore, their artwork did not incorporate machines and technology. People did not have the resources or knowledge to use techonolgy to create their artwork in the 1950s.
Due to all of the ecological changes that have occured since the 1950s, artists use materials to create artworks that show the world how these changes have had a devasting effect on the world. Because the world has changed since the 1950s, the artists work is also going to change

yes, i do feel that i rely on technology, it has been part of my every day life since i was born. i think that everyone has a level to which they must rely on it. if you look around you, technology is used for everything from school to shopping, and while you are shopping, eveyone is on their phones. art has managed to develop over the years with our advancements in all of this and poeple now have the ability to surf the net to have the world opened to them. has this affected the way that art has changed and grown with our society... artist have gained both technology and the knowledge that comes with it was it not a givin that the art would grow and change with the times.

Technology has a big affect on people and society. Art changes everyday and so does Technology. Tim Hawkinson form of artwork was very different and unique. I was really fascinated with his artwork when we watched him in class. The technology that he uses for this artwork is something amazing. It was something that i never seen before and i was so amused by it. Mel Chin likes to change images of things and likes to create things back to the way it was. The media, technique, and diversity of life has been deeply something of the environment that Chin puts in his artwork. The point is that technolgy is always going to be apart of our lifes. It can be a good or bad thing for people. It can also be a advantage or disadvantage for society and life.

I think that technology has completely changed the way we are exposed to Art and also how Art is created. Not only are visual artists incorporating more complex technology but also performance artist such as musicians. Also the internet creates a huge network of information that is accessible that in the 1950 wouldnt have even been imaged. Yes i think that we rely on machinery and technology just as much as we relay on our bodies to live. Technology has become so deeply ingrained in our culture that we have become completely dependent on its expansion for future survival.

Technological changes have had impacts on every part of our lives including art since the 1950s.
Computers along with even simple machines are now accessable to everyone even on a low budget so artists have the opportunity to try new things that were never before possible.
Many people would think that everything has been done already in regards to art but technology opens up new doors for new possibilities in the artistic realm.
