Caravaggio...

OK...my bad...Caravaggio...born 1571...died 1610. That makes more sense...Sometimes I get a little goofy with my dates.
Thanks.

I lauged for like five minutes when I read this post, because I definitely called my friend last night and talked to her about how Caravaggio killed a man at like fifteen.

You're right, this does make more sense.

That makes a LOT more sense, I sat in class thinking wow, he really led a short life and did amazing artwork at like 5 years old haha.

To me, Caravaggio's work is a bit ironic and disturbing. The fact that most of his work pertains to some sort of violence, mainly beheadings, is a reflection of a brilliant, but uncontrolled mind. The irony that I see in his paintings is that, his paintings are gruesome and pertaining to violence, yet he also seems to portray a theological view as well. I was viewing paintings of his and I saw one of a man being beheaded by a shepherd with a lamb in the painting. As we all know, jesus was said to have been a shepherd, so I think that it's ironic that he would paint an image that could be viewed as a knock on Jesus Christ. I'm sure he was commissioned to paint as such, it just seemed a bit ironic to me.

i really like this piece. the colors are really vibrant, but
my favorite thing about this piece is the halo over the man's head. It is unlike most paintings of saints or holy people where the halos are so over powering, but this one subtle. it makes the man modest and humble. you don't feel intimidated by him or like you should feel like you are unworthy of his presence. i like how caravaggio makes jesus and other such holy things seem approachable. he's not being disrespectful.

I dont know much about Caravaggio, but I think that the painting is kinda spooky actually...whoever painted this really knew what they were doing because this painting really caught my eye.

ya i agree with everyone that makes a load more sense. i thought maybe he was just a child prodigy that went crazy maybe.

It might make more sense, but I think it takes away from some of my interest about him. I looked this up after class, thinking "any painter that kills a man in a knife fight, dies on the run at 17-years-old, and paints like this-- well, he just deserves for me to look him up". So, in short, I looked at some of his paintings online, and though I was impressed, my interest in Caravaggio as a person is shot.

So, my comment is nothing about Caravaggio, but about the blog/site. I thought I would check out the links you have along the side of the website, and I really enjoyed the site Art21. I don't have an art background or know a lot about it, so I am excited for this semester of learning!

Yup i agree... When you told us the original dates i was quite astounded at the fact that he could have done everything you said in 17 years including a lot of violence. However looking it up on the internet brought up lots of unusual paintings. I didnt think that he could have acomplished all of this in such a short amount of time. SO its good to hear that he was older than originally told. It gives him more respect he is not just seen as the crazy young kid that did a lot of violent pieces.

As far as the painting above it gives a creepy appearence. However i have to agree with some of the others caravaggio had the ability to make something that was seen in high respects seem approachable.

it was definitely more interesting when caravaggio died at the age of 17 after being on the run as a murderer at the age of 15. Now it makes way more sense, just not as funny/interesting ha

when it was said that Caravaggio did all this in such a short amount of time and died at seventeen it really caught my attention. I know now that that wasnt the case but i still look at his artwork as great pieces of expression and emotion. this painting caught my eye becuase of the skill and irony embedded into it. great piece.

In my opinion, caravaggio is an amazing painter, yes at times a little disturbing but in a way i feel that, that is what makes him unique and such a inspiration in the art world.

So, I was browsing some of Caravaggio's works and continually see a lamb peeping its head into the picture next to a man who is about to be beheaded. This makes me laugh for a second because the white angle aside is basically saying, " look here old man, I will give you this lamb if you give me that knife." Holy figures and torture...SUCH IRONY!. Maybe that's just what I interpret is going on. His artwork is all very creative and unique how he mixes contrasting brightly colored fruits against the very bland skins of the people around them.
